How to select the appropriate chemical resistant gloves?

Time : 2022-02-18 Hits : 182

The hands are vulnerable.Different kinds of gloves provide specific protection. We often categorize gloves into cut resistant gloves,anti-static gloves,construction gloves and so on.Today, let’s discuss the chemical resistant gloves.

Chemical resistant gloves are essential to protecting employees from hazardous and toxic chemical exposures. They are the final barrier between the employee and a potentially fatal health hazard. These gloves protect workers’ hands from most water solutions of acids, alkalis, salts and ketones.

We will explain chemical resistant gloves from three aspects.

Nitrile – a synthetic rubber with excellent flexibility, puncture resistance, strength and abrasion resistance. They also offer resistance to many chemicals making them great for general-duty short-duration tasks.Nitrile gloves are resistant to alkaline solutions, as well as certain acidic solutions. Overall, nitrile gloves acid resistance is very good in comparison to latex gloves and vinyl gloves.

PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride is an ideal alternative for those with latex allergies, PVC chemical-resistant gloves offer good abrasion resistance, but may be susceptible to punctures, cuts, and snags. PVC is effective against water and most aqueous solutions, detergents, and diluted bases and acids, but has limited chemical resistance to organic solvents. PVC is one of the more common coatings for coated work gloves.

Butyl – synthetic rubber that offers good protection against peroxides, highly corrosive acids, strong bases, ketones, esters, and nitro-compounds. Butyl holds up well to oxidation and abrasion, and works well in cold temperatures because it does not stiffen.

Latex – generally found to be comfortable, and make a good general-purpose glove. They offer good protection from water solutions of acids, alkalis, salts, and ketones, have good elasticity, and function well in hot and cold environments. Latex allergies can prevent them from being used by some employees.

Neoprene – very dense and resists tears well. It also is very pliable, and allows for better fine manipulation. Generally considered to be superior to latex.

Chemical protective or chemical handling glove must meet the requirements of European glove standard EN374.

The standard ensures consistency in testing and helps users and safety professionals as they determine their chemical protection needs.

EN 374 has several parts. The following parts are relevant for chemical protective gloves:

           · Type A: Chemical protection with breakthrough times > 30 minutes for at least 6 of the 18 listed chemicals within the standard

· Type B: Chemical protection with breakthrough times > 30 minutes for at least 3 of the 18 listed chemicals within the standard.

· Type C: Chemical protection with a breakthrough time of > 10 minutes for at least 1 of the 18 listed chemicals within the standard.

The standard is mainly used for product comparison and also offers security that the product has undergone standardized certification. It should be observed in particular for the risks of contact with micro-organisms (bacteria/viruses).

PVC is a perfect choice for various workplaces because of its excellent price-quality ratio. They are made by adding an external coating called Polyvinyl chloride to your gloves. This outer layer protects you from chemicals, abrasions, punctures, and cuts from your tools and substances. Triple-dipped PVC-coated glove with a rough textured layer covering the hand area providing a enhanced grip and feel. The seamless cotton liner absorbs perspiration because of white cotton lining.

This particular glove has an insulation made of a seamless brushed terry cloth, keeping your hands warm and dry. They can be used in many cold condition environment. The special thing about this lining, however, is that the lining moves with the rest of the glove, offering wearers a wide range of motion.

On top of that, these gloves will protect wearers from a wide range of common chemicals. They are particularly suited for use in the commercial fishing industry and petrochemical refineries.

The glove boasts an excellent grip that allows wearers to handle slippery or wet objects with ease. As well, the technology within these gloves allows them to maintain flexibility.
